The Robertson Hebrew Congregation, established in 1896, in that year consecrated the land for this cemetery, and built the Synagogue (38 Adderley Street) and the Mikvah (ritual pool) (54 Victoria Street – note the two roofs, the taller of which housed the mikvah). In 1927, 36 Adderley Street was acquired as the Rabbi’s residence and Communal Hall and served as such until the 19603. The Robertson Hebrew School operated from the Mikvah building until the 19603. It was sold and extended into a domestic house, since when it has been privately owned. The Robertson Hebrew School was revived in 1996 by the Cape Board of Jewish Education. It functioned in the Synagogue until 1999, during which time the teacher was Rabbi Stuart Serwator. The Robertson Hebrew Congregation closed down in 2009, when it sold the Synagogue, Rabbi’s residence and Communal Hall. Part of the proceeds of the sale of these properties was donated to the Robertson Museum. A. trust fund was created for the remainder, administered by the Cape South African Jewish Board of Deputies’ Country Communities’ Dept, which maintains the cemetery.
